Why 1981?
After moving to NYC, the band Bad Brains took with them a distinctive new sound that shaped the post-punk world.
This sound became known as hardcore, or hXc.
Alongside the sound came a strong set of values:
positivity, equality, community and unity.
The year was 1981!
1981 owner, Damien Diablo, started cutting his band mates’ hair during years of playing and touring in hardcore bands.
Now a family man, but still with a hXC soul, he has been barbering professionally for the last six years, in the UK and at festivals, pop ups and on the stages of barber shows all over Europe.
After living that nomadic life, Cornish boy Damien has come home. Bringing with him those old skool hardcore values.
It’s much more than just a haircut... it’s a lifestyle.
Death to bad hair
The Team
Joining Damien at 1981 is Dan Blackwell.
Sharing a passion for hair and always putting family and community above all else.
They make a badass team, equip to cater for all your hair and beard needs.
Zero Waste - What is it?
Zero Waste is a set of principles focused on waste prevention - the goal being that no rubbish is sent to landfills, incinerators or the ocean.
Why is 1981 committing to this?
The hair industry is a major contributor to the five million tonnes of plastic discarded every year. Recycling isn’t enough — only 9% of all plastic waste on the planet has been recycled.
How are we helping?
All our energy comes from 100% green sources - sun, wind and water.
We only use sustainable products on your hair - even our combs are all metal or biodegradable.
The hair that you don’t want will help save the oceans! Say what?!
Yep, your hair clippings will be fashioned into booms to clean up oil spills, instead of slowing down decomposition in landfills.
So, along with your killa haircut, you’re also doing something awesome for the planet.
